Electronic health information exchange, or "HIE", is the secure electronic exchange of patient personal health information between treating physicians, hospitals, health care payers, and other health care providers involved in the care of the patient.

| HIT INCENTIVE PROGRAMS |
| For more information on electronic prescribing and the Medicaid and Medicare EHR Incentive Programs click on the link above E-prescribing is the electronic transmission of prescription or prescription related information between a prescriber, dispenser, pharmacy benefit manager, or health plan. In 2013 Physicians participating in the program can potentially receive an incentive equal to 0.5% of their Medicare part B charges.
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) established criteria for Medicare and Medicaid participating physicians to receie financial incentives for using EHRs in a meaningful manner. Implementation of certified EHR technology will enable physicians to take advantage of Federal Stimulus funding of up to $44,000 in additional Medicare payments and up to $63,750 in additional Medicaid payments between 2011 and 2015.
